Americana Pittsburgh Glass Blue Applied Rim Pontil Bowl 19th Century Large 8 1/2" Diameter
Americana Pittsburgh Glass Blue Applied Rim Pontil Bowl 19th Century Large 8 1/2" Diameter
Excellent condition hand blown glass milk or cream bowl made in clear glass with a separately applied blue rim. It has a cut and polished pontil and measures 8 1/2" wide by 5 1/2" high. It dates to the early 1800's and was most likely from the Pittsburgh area. There are examples of early glass apothecary glass jars from Pittsburgh with an applied blue rim similar to this bowl. It was most likely used either as a trifle dish or possibly as a cream bowl to collect the cream. It is a true antique piece of glass not to be confused with contemporary Mexican pieces of glass that you see with a blue tinted edge. This is a quality piece of glass with a good bell tone when struck and shows sufficient signs of use and wear from almost 200 years of use. The inside of the bowl has a high spot that shows some fine scratching where a spoon probably came in constant contact with it over the years and the base edges also show appropriate signs of wear. This is a very nice example of early glass close to 200 years old yet timeless in its elegance and design. PG5
