This is a lovely example of an early engine-turned black basalt teapot made in England during the late 18th century. There is a small repair to the tip of the spout but no other issues. It is well done and is not obvious except with close inspection. It is not signed but is quality work and design. The term engine-turned describes the work that is done to the surface of the teapot. Josiah Wedgwood started using a lathe for pottery and porcelain in 1768 in order to accomplish the elaborate borders and designs to the pieces. It is a tedious process that was not used on all of the pieces.
